Lying quietly in a desolate corner of Prague’s Jewish town is Europe’s oldest surviving Jewish cemetery. Part creepy and part fascinating, this cemetery has over 100,000 bodies buried on top of each other. Yes, believe it or not but there are 11 cemeteries stacked on top of each other at this site. The result is that the headstones are now crammed besides each other making it a whimsical sight and a rare, eerie occurrence. Hidden beneath the tombstones are thousands of intriguing stories; there are stories of pogroms, fires and floods. Some lavish tombstones speak of the golden days in the 16th century Renaissance, when Emperor Rudolph II ruled. A truly rare attraction, the Old Jewish Cemetery is a must visit just for its historical and cultural importance.
