One of the prime seven basilicas in the world that are of immense importance to the pilgrims, this is also where famous architect Bernini is buried. Dating back to 432 AD, this basilica is one of Rome’s four patriarchal basilicas. The Basilica is said to be fallen miraculously from the summit of Esquiline Hill to its current location in 358 AD.

The church underwent number of refurbishments and today depicts a mixture of 14th century Romanesque belfry and 18th century baroque facade along with spectacular 5th century mosaics. The exterior flaunts the 13th century mosaics and the tallest belfry of Rome stands proudly delighting visitors. The 5th century mosaics in the triumphal arch and nave depict the tales from the Old Testament with the central image signed by Jacopo Torriti dating back to 13th century. The image displays the coronation of Virgin Mary.
